Gage Park Latinx Council
A look at our work during the first six months of 2020.
A note from our team:
2020 has been a challenging and unpredictable year. Many of the issues our communities face on a regular basis have been magnified by the Covid-19 pandemic. Access to healthcare, job security, food security and educational inequity are just a few examples of this. At GPLXC we have shifted our work to meet the needs of our community in response to the pandemic. We are half way into the year and would like to reflect on the work we have been doing with you all.
Moving forward and looking toward the future we are committed to opening the GPLXC Center in 2021!
Become a Donor today and help us open a grassroots Latinx owned and operated Community Center on the Southwest Side of Chicago in Gage Park.
In response to the pandemic we have distributed over 700 meals to the community. We saw first hand how food insecurity is effecting Gage Park and are working on ways in which to ensure access to groceries for the families we serve. When the GPLXC Center is opened we are committed to operating a free food pantry that is accessible and welcoming to all.
We have raised over $65,000 for Undocumented families living on the Southwest side of Chicago. With this we have been able to offer financial assistance to over 100 families who did not qualify for federal aid during the pandemic.
BIKES FOR YOUTH
We are supplying youth with FREE bikes to sustainably and safely commute around Chicago this summer. Access to public space is at the core of our mission at GPLXC. We want to help youth enjoy their community and reclaim their sidewalks as safe places to play and learn while promoting sustainability and an active lifestyle.
Thank you to Working Bikes for partnering with us on this initative.
Our Free Art Programs for youth has gone remote. We are supplying youth with art supplies and instructional videos to follow along with at home as they create and connect virtually. Our youth will continue to create at home until we can safely come together again at the GPLXC Center!
