Obama Foundation visits GPLXC

History often happens in the quiet corners of innovation, like the storefront community center and grassroots spaces organized by GPLXC.

We were honored to host the Obama Foundation, which visited our headquarters for an intimate sit-down with our co-founder, Samantha Martinez. As a former Obama Scholar and current PHD student at the University of Chicago, Samantha was the subject of this video produced by the Obama Foundation.

Why the Obama Foundation Chose GPLXC

The Obama Foundation has long been a champion of "active citizenship." Their interest in GPLXC stems from Samantha’s unique approach to bridge the gap between high-level academic infrastructure and grassroots social impact.

During the walkthrough, the Foundation team observed how our unique initiatives were used to revitalize our local community directly after the impacts of the pandemic. Gage Park and the 60632 zip code had the city’s highest death rates in 2021, and our direct work through feeding families, creating community, and co-opening the city's first-ever vaccination site was lifesaving.

Key Discussion Highlights

The video covered several critical pillars that align with the Foundation’s mission:

  • Democratic Access to Innovation: Discussing how to lower the barrier of entry for underrepresented founders in the Non-Profit space.

  • Leadership Pipelines: Exploring ways to integrate GPLXC’s programs with the Obama Foundation’s global network of Leaders.

  • The GPLXC Model: Shining a light on the unique models of organizing that GPLXC has cultivated and spearheaded in the Grassroots movement space.

A Shared Vision for the Future

The Foundation highlighted Samantha’s leadership as a blueprint for how modern leaders can balance "Education with purpose."

When leaders from the world stage take the time to engage with local innovators, it validates a powerful truth: The most impactful changes often start with a single community and a bold vision.
