A recap of GPLXC’s May activities
Mercadito
The Gage Park Latinx Council Mercadito, a free community food distribution program operational since March 2020, relaunched in May with a restructured appointment-only system. This change prioritizes the safety and security of community members in the current political climate, eliminating long lines and wait times for more effective service. Our goal remains to address food insecurity in the neighborhood, focusing on access to fresh, culturally relevant produce. As part of the relaunch, we contacted 100 families in the Gage Park community to offer them monthly groceries for the upcoming year.
El Mercadito del Concilio Latinx de Gage Park, un programa gratuito de distribución de alimentos para la comunidad en funcionamiento desde Marzo de 2020, se relanzó en Mayo con un sistema reestructurado solo con cita. Este cambio prioriza la seguridad de los miembros de la comunidad en el clima político actual, eliminando largas filas y tiempos de espera para un servicio más eficaz. Nuestro objetivo sigue siendo abordar la inseguridad alimentaria en el vecindario, centrándonos en el acceso a productos frescos y culturalmente relevantes. Como parte del relanzamiento, contactamos a 100 familias en la comunidad de Gage Park para ofrecerles comestibles mensuales para el próximo año.
Juntas Nos Apoyamos
May was Mental Health Awareness month and we are proud to launch the spring cohort of our Juntas Nos Apoyamos program for the second year at Bienestar! This free annual program is inspired by the experiences of many immigrant women of color in our communities who often have to navigate their mental health journeys unsupported and alone. The program spanning five weeks supports women in our community to cultivate environments for their experiences, learn a variety of holistic health topics, as well as develop practices that support their socio-emotional wellbeing. Throughout the five weeks, community members establish trust, friendships, and systems of care with one another as they navigate their journeys of growth and healing!
Mayo fue el mes de la Concientización sobre la Salud Mental y estamos orgullosos de lanzar la cohorte de primavera de nuestro programa Juntas Nos Apoyamos por segundo año en Bienestar! Este programa anual gratuito está inspirado en las experiencias de muchas mujeres inmigrantes de color en nuestras comunidades que a menudo tienen que navegar sus viajes de salud mental sin apoyo y solas. El programa que abarca cinco semanas apoya a las mujeres en nuestra comunidad para cultivar entornos para sus experiencias, aprender una variedad de temas de salud holística, así como desarrollar prácticas que apoyen su bienestar socioemocional. A lo largo de las cinco semanas, los miembros de la comunidad establecen confianza, amistades y sistemas de cuidado entre sí mientras navegan por sus caminos de crecimiento y curación!
Pequeños Lectores
The Pequeños Lectores program, a five-week initiative for children aged 6-10, began its second year on May 16th. Held every Friday for an hour, the program focuses on improving English reading abilities, fostering a love of reading, and connecting young participants. Through individual and group reading exercises, Pequeños Lectores highlights the importance of literature for the community's youth.
El programa Pequeños Lectores, una iniciativa de cinco semanas para niños de 6 a 10 años, comenzó su segundo año el 16 de Mayo. Celebrado todos los viernes durante una hora, el programa se centra en mejorar las habilidades de lectura en inglés, fomentar el amor por la lectura y conectar a los jóvenes participantes. A través de ejercicios de lectura individuales y grupales, Pequeños Lectores destaca la importancia de la literatura para la juventud de la comunidad.
Volunteer Open House
Our inaugural volunteer open house took place this May at the Cultural Center. We welcomed interested community members for an in-person information session. During the event, we provided an overview of our organization, discussed diverse volunteer opportunities, and assisted attendees with setting up their volunteer portal accounts. Nuestra primera casa abierta de voluntarios tuvo lugar este Mayo en el Centro Cultural. Dimos la bienvenida a los miembros de la comunidad interesados para una sesión informativa en persona. Free Book Program
The GPLXC Free Book Program aims to combat the shortage of readily available reading materials in Gage Park. This initiative distributes free books to foster literacy, enhance access to literature, support educational pursuits, and strengthen community bonds. Individuals and families are invited to visit our Cultural Center at 2711 W 51st St., between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., to choose free books. A diverse collection of genres and reading levels is offered, with selections available in both English and Spanish.
El Programa de Libros Gratuitos de GPLXC tiene como objetivo combatir la escasez de materiales de lectura disponibles en Gage Park. Esta iniciativa distribuye libros gratuitos para fomentar la alfabetización, mejorar el acceso a la literatura, apoyar las actividades educativas y fortalecer los lazos comunitarios. Se invita a individuos y familias a visitar nuestro Centro Cultural en 2711 W 51st St., entre las 10 a.m. y las 5 p.m., para elegir libros gratuitos. Know Your Rights
GPLXC recently hosted students from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School on May 14th to make community members aware of their legal rights in the case of an ICE encounter. Students helped design “Know Your Rights” flyers with a QR code for community members to learn more detailed rights from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Students expressed the importance of continuing to share resources with our Gage Park neighborhood and helped put these flyers around the community!
GPLXC recientemente recibió a estudiantes de Whitney M. Young Magnet High School el 14 de Mayo para informar a los miembros de la comunidad sobre sus derechos legales en caso de un encuentro con ICE. Los estudiantes ayudaron a diseñar folletos de "Conozca Sus Derechos" con un código QR para que los miembros de la comunidad aprendan derechos más detallados de la Unión Americana de Libertades Civiles (ACLU). Los estudiantes expresaron la importancia de seguir compartiendo recursos con nuestro vecindario de Gage Park y ayudaron a colocar estos folletos en toda la comunidad!
GPLXC x Chicago History Museum
GPLXC Executive Director Antonio Santos discussed thriving as resistance to white supremacy and colonialism at the Chicago History Museum, connecting it to GPLXC's mission. This engagement aimed to amplify the organization's work within established Chicago institutions and shine a positive light on the Gage Park community.
El Director Ejecutivo de GPLXC, Antonio Santos, habló sobre prosperar como resistencia a la supremacía blanca y al colonialismo en el Museo de Historia de Chicago, conectándolo con la misión de GPLXC. Este compromiso tuvo como objetivo amplificar el trabajo de la organización dentro de las instituciones establecidas de Chicago y dar una luz positiva a la comunidad de Gage Park.

GPLXC was invited to speak about the barriers that we face when accessing public transportation, leading to a decrease in rideshares in the Southwest side. On the map, there are large facilities and industrial sites (highlighted in yellow), a large number of single homes (highlighted in green), and the segregation of commercial buildings (highlighted in blue) from all the mentioned areas contributes to longer distances, congestion, and limited options to travel between neighborhoods. Our recommendation in the long term for CTA is to participate in the zoning decisions that prioritize transit-oriented models in urban development. In the short term, we demanded safety regulations for immigrants and an expansion to language accessibility in signage, staff, and technology. The Art of Pride
Start Pride month on an artistic note! Come join us this Sunday, June 1 at the Hyde Park Art Center located at 5020 S Cornell Ave. to kick off Pride month. This free event has a variety of workshops that will be offered. GPLXC will be there having a collage one. Stop by and make a collage! There will also be live performances, health and wellness screenings and an artist vendor market.

Pequeño Soñadores
Our annual Pequeños Soñadores art program is scheduled to begin on June 24th! Registration for this year's program received an overwhelmingly positive response, and all selected children have been notified. Due to high demand, all 30 spots filled quickly. Please follow our social media channels for announcements about future program opportunities.

José Daniel Hernandez is a first generation Mexican American writer. He was born and raised in the Little Village neighborhood. His favorite hobbies include running, reading and writing.
José Daniel Hernández es un escritor mexico-americano de primera generación. Nació y creció en el barrio de La Villita. Sus pasatiempos favoritos son correr, leer y escribir.
Andrew Mazariegos-Ovalle is a first-generation Guatemalan American artist. He was born and raised in the South West side of Chicago and has lived in Gage Park for the past ten years. He received a B.A in Studio Art and Environmental Studies from St. Olaf College in 2024.
Andrew Mazariegos-Ovalle es un artista guatemalteco-estadounidense de primera generación. Nació y creció en el suroeste de Chicago y ha vivido en Gage Park durante los últimos diez años. Obtuvo su licenciatura en Arte de Estudio y Estudios Ambientales en St. Olaf College en 2024.
Raised in the West Elsdon neighborhood, Anabelle is a student at Michigan State University studying Public Policy. Deeply involved on campus in multiple programs and clubs, she has a keen passion in community support and development. Anabelle is excited to join the GPLXC team in furthering their mission of uplifting and engaging community members through programming and services. In her free time, Anabelle loves to scrapbook, do photography, and go on walks.
Criada en el barrio de West Elsdon, Anabelle estudia Políticas Públicas en la Universidad Estatal de Michigan. Participa activamente en diversos programas y clubes del campus y siente una gran pasión por el apoyo y el desarrollo comunitario. Anabelle está entusiasmada de unirse al equipo de GPLXC para impulsar su misión de inspirar e involucrar a los miembros de la comunidad a través de programas y servicios.
